NihontoWatchNihontoWatch月山は、出羽国月山を拠点に蝦夷の御用鍛冶として繁栄した伝統ある奥州月山鍛冶の末流です。大阪に移住して鍛刀しました。代々備前伝を得意としていますが、山城伝の名作を写したものも多く残されています。天保頃の貞吉は相州伝を姿強く焼いて、貞一は五ヶ伝を上手に使い分ける器用さと、彫りの名手としても有名です。子の貞勝は山城伝を多く鍛えました。本刀の貞一は天保七年生まれ。大正七年七月に八十四歳で没するまで、各伝上位作を狙った名作を上手に造りました。奥州月山の綾杉肌を復元して、明治三十九年には帝室技芸員となるなど名実共に一時代を築いた名工です。孫の二代貞一も人間国宝となり、当代 月山貞利刀匠は無鑑査刀匠であります。 本作は刃長が七寸六分、平造の短刀です。表に草の倶利伽羅と蓮台、裏に爪付きの護摩箸を彫刻します。鍛は板目に杢目交じり、地沸よく付き、肌目に沿って地景が入ります。刃文は尖り互の目を焼き、処々腰開きごころ、高低が付き、刃縁に金線、金筋等が盛んにかかって働き、匂口柔らかに明るく冴えます。帽子はそのまま乱れて先小丸に返ります。茎は生ぶ、丁寧に化粧鑢がかかり、銘と刻印を切ります。初代月山貞一。鍛刀技術の高さはもちろんのこと、彫物も上手な同工の御刀です。白鞘、金着一重はばき。※本品は古研ぎですので、写真では見えにくいヒケ傷やスレ傷がございます。

The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
