NihontoWatchNihontoWatch月山とは出羽国月山を拠点に蝦夷の御用鍛冶として繁栄した伝統ある奥州月山鍛冶の末流です。大阪に移住して鍛刀しました。代々備前伝を得意としていますが山城伝の名作を写したものも多く残されています。天保頃の貞吉は相州伝を姿強く焼いて、貞一は五ヶ伝を上手に使い分ける器用さと、彫りの名手としても有名です。子の貞勝は山城伝を多く鍛えました。本刀の貞一は雲竜子と号し、大正七年七月、八十四歳で没するまで各伝上位作を狙った名作を上手に造りました。奥州月山の綾杉肌を復元して、明治三十九年には帝室技芸員となるなど名実共に一時代を築いた名工です。孫の二代貞一も人間国宝となり、現代の月山貞利は無形文化財であります。 ご紹介する御刀は初代月山貞一、27歳の作品です。体配は刃長が二尺七寸八分と同工作品中、他に類を見ることのない長寸。身幅重ね共に広く、反り浅く、切っ先がふくら枯れ心に延びた鋭利で力感あふれる刀姿です。地鉄は板目が細かに詰み、崩れる事のない美麗な鍛えです。刃文は匂口深く、小沸が均一によくついた直刃で、刃縁より沸が煌びやかに冴え、若打ちながらそれをまるで感じさせない様は同工の才覚の片鱗が現れます。帽子は直ぐで小丸に返ります。茎は錆味落ち着き、丁寧な化粧鑢をかけ、勢いのある銘を刻します。本刀二尺七寸八分という刃長、まず目を引くところと思われますが、ただ長寸であるわけでなく、微細に整う破綻のない鍛え肌、焼き刃、茎の鑢目一つに至るまで、総体精緻に仕立てられてた御刀であります。これほどの刀を鍛刀する事はそれ自体が困難でありますが、同工は持ち前の器用さ・才覚により、美術刀剣としての高い品格を持ち合わせた本刀を完成させ、当時の諸刀工になしえない壁を突破しました。ここに同工の作品中他に並びない、日本一の月山貞一をご紹介させていただきます。白鞘、金一重はばき、特別保存刀剣鑑定書。

The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
