Description

This is a masterpiece *tanto* in the *Bizen-den* tradition by the *Teishitsu Gigeiin* swordsmith Gassan Sadakazu. Gassan Sadakazu was appointed as a *Teishitsu Gigeiin* in April of Meiji 39 (1906), and this *tanto* is a monumental masterpiece created the following year after his appointment. The *sugata* is exceptionally fine despite its short length; the *jigane* is a tightly packed *ko-itame hada* with *chikei* appearing in the *ji*. The *hamon* is a *nioi-deki* based *gunome* with *ko-nie*, featuring fine *kinsuji* within the *ha*, which is truly magnificent. The *horimono*, which represents the true essence of the master smith Gassan Sadakazu, features a *sukken* carved on the *omote* and *gomabashi* masterfully carved on the *ura*, living up to his reputation as a modern master of carving. The *koshirae* from that period is wonderful, featuring *menuki* with auspicious New Year designs in *kin-iroe*, and a *kozuka* and *wari-kogai* with wave designs on a *ginji* base. This *kawari-nuri aikuchi koshirae* adds even more splendor to this *tanto*. Please enjoy this masterpiece by Gassan Sadakazu, a *Teishitsu Gigeiin* who stands at the absolute pinnacle of the sword world in both name and reality.
