
This is a Juyo Tosogu designated tsuba by Gotou Mitsumasa, the 9th generation head of the Gotou family. Born in Keicho 8 (1603), Mitsumasa inherited the Gotou Rihee family at age 22 and later became the 9th head of the main Gotou lineage. This elegant tsuba features carved waves and scattered chrysanthemums, and is particularly rare as tsuba production was uncommon for the Gotou family, and Mitsumasa is said to be the first to sign his tsuba.
