NihontoWatch現代刀匠の最高位、重要無形文化財（人間国宝）天田昭次刀匠の作品。 天田昭次（本名 天田誠一）は昭和2年8月4日天田貞吉の長男として本田村本田 ( 現・新発田市 ) に生まれ。日本刀鍛錬伝習所に入門、鍛刀の技術を学んで若くから頭角を表し、新作名刀展に於いて３度正宗賞を受賞(昭和52年,60年,平成8年)、伊勢神宮式年遷宮神宝太刀の製作者にも選ばれ、平成9年重要無形文化財保持者 (人間国宝) に認定されている。平成25年6月26日死去。 天田昭次は作刀の素材を自家製鉄で賄っている希有な刀工で、砂鉄を吟味し、鍛錬法を工夫し、得られた鉄を鍛えた結果として、これまでに山城伝、相州伝、備前伝といった様々な作風を会得、数々の名作を残している。本作は大和伝の古剣を狙ったと思われる作品で、独自の精錬炉によって精錬された地鉄は小板目肌がよくつんで澄みわたり、刃文は一点の破綻もない直刃を焼き上げ、寸法、身幅、重ね、わずかにくびれたその体配に至るまで、古式大和で完成された剣の黄金律を見事に体現した人間国宝、天田昭次刀匠の技量を余すところなく伝えた快心の一振りである。

Shōwa to the present: destruction and revival
The twentieth century nearly killed the craft twice: wartime distortion, then the occupation ban. The NBTHK’s founding in 1948 and licensed forging from 1953 rebuilt the sword as an art, crowned by Living National Treasures and the mukansa rank.
Certifies a genuine blade worth preserving: a signature confirmed correct, or, if unsigned, an era, province, and school that the NBTHK can reliably identify.
The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
