NihontoWatch本作は現代刀匠の最高位である重要無形文化財保持者(人間国宝)天田昭次刀匠の作品です。天田昭次(天田誠一)は昭和二年八月四日、刀工「天田貞吉」の長男として、現在の新潟県新発田市に生まれました。九歳で父を亡くした昭次は昭和十五年、十三歳で上京し、日本刀鍛錬伝習所に入門します。昭和二十九年に文化財保護委員会より作刀認可されると、翌年の第一回作刀技術発表会に於いて優秀賞を受賞しました。若くして頭角を表した昭次は、名刀展に於いて三度、正宗賞の栄誉に輝き(昭和五十二年,六十年,平成八年)、平成二年に全日本刀匠会理事長に就任します。平成九年には、重要無形文化財保持者(人間国宝)に認定されました。平成十一年、勲四等旭日小綬賞を受賞。長年にわたり自家製鉄を行い、玉鋼の研究、鍛錬法を工夫し、山城伝、相州伝、備前伝といった様々な作風を会得しました。平成二十五年六月二十六日、八十五歳で亡くなるまで数多くの名作を残しました。また本作の彫物は、岡山県出身の柳村仙寿(柳村重信)で、刀身彫刻において現代最高峰の技量を誇る無鑑査彫師です。 本刀は、刃長が一尺二寸六分強の平造りの脇差です。地鉄は板目肌がよく練れて詰んだ精美な鍛えに、杢目が交じり肌良く現れて地沸付きます。刃文は小沸出来の互の目乱れで、匂口柔らかに明るく冴えます。刃中には総体砂流しが頻りにかかって働き、覇気に溢れた焼刃となります。帽子はそのまま乱れこんで先小丸へ返ります。彫刻は表に玉追い龍、裏には不動明王の梵字、護摩箸、蓮台を刻します。その精緻な彫刻は刀身全体を引き立てて、より一層格調高い美術品へと本刀を昇華させています。刀身は人間国宝刀匠、彫刻は無鑑査彫師という誠に豪華な顔合わせの一振で、天田昭次と柳村仙寿、両名の精華を示した優品です。金着せ二重はばき、白鞘、特別保存刀剣鑑定書。

Shōwa to the present: destruction and revival
The twentieth century nearly killed the craft twice: wartime distortion, then the occupation ban. The NBTHK’s founding in 1948 and licensed forging from 1953 rebuilt the sword as an art, crowned by Living National Treasures and the mukansa rank.

The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
