NihontoWatch月山貞一は貞吉の養子で、雲龍子と号しました。明治九年(1976)の廃刀令によって多くの刀工が転業しましたが、貞一は作刀を続け、明治39年(1906)には帝室技芸員(現在の人間国宝)に任命されました。14歳から作刀を初め、大正七年(1918)七月84歳で亡くなるまで、実に70年の永きに渡り作刀しました。初期作は豪刀で反り浅く、刃文は直刃又は大乱れ華やかなものが、晩年は丁子刃を主に軍刀身に応じたものを多く鍛えています。その作風は備前、相州、山城、大和の各伝に通じており、彫物も巧みで、這龍、旗鉾、不動などがあります。 本作は平造、三ツ棟、身幅尋常、6寸弱と小振りな体配です。表に素剣、裏に護摩箸の彫物があります。地鉄は小板目流れ、地沸つき、地景混じり、映りけあり、刃文は沸勝ちに直ぐ調に小互の目、小のたれを交え、上半に行くと、焼き高くなって、帽子返り深く、皆焼風となり、砂流よく入り、激しい出来栄えとなっています。白鞘は無く、拵入ですが、桐の蒔絵の鞘に目貫も五三桐紋となった外装で、特別な高貴な方の注文品ではなかったかと思われます。

Meiji: survival after the edict
The Haitōrei edict of 1876 ended sword wearing and nearly ended the craft itself. Military demand and imperial patronage kept a remnant alive, and in 1906 Gassan Sadakazu and Miyamoto Kanenori were named Artists to the Imperial Household.

The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
