NihontoWatchForged in 1987, Work at his 80 years old Moto-haba (width at Ha-machi) approx. 3.1cm "Sho Chiku Bai" on the right face(Omote) 出羽国に栄えた月山鍛冶の伝統を守り、昭和四十六年に人間国宝に指定された貞一は、帝室技芸員を拝命した貞勝の子で、明治四十年の生まれ。幼い頃から祖父に当たる雲龍子貞一と貞勝に就いて作刀を学び、大正十四年には十代にして大阪美術協会発足記念展覧会で受賞。戦後は技術が認められて伊勢神宮式年遷宮の御太刀の製作にも携わるのみならず、さらなる研鑽努力を惜しまず、殊に精妙なる刀身彫刻を追求して月山一門のお家芸にまで昇華させたのであった。 この脇差は、南北朝時代に隆盛した相州物の平脇差を手本に、貞一刀匠が得意とした精密な彫刻が映える作。寸を控えめにわずかに先反りを付けた、物打辺りに張りのある頑健な姿格好。松竹梅の図柄は、彫際から垂直に彫り込まれた中にくっきりとした肉彫で、笹葉と松葉が鋭く広がり、独特の肌模様を呈する松樹と背後の梅樹の様子も延びやか。伝統的な這龍をお目出たい図柄に擬えたものであることは明白。対とされる裏の古典的な護摩箸もそれを証している。地鉄は細やかにして均質に詰んだ小板目鍛えながら、その地底に月山伝統の綾杉風にゆったりと流れる肌が窺いとれ、細やかな地沸が全面に付いて躍動感に満ちている。区下焼き込みから始まる刃文は大小の互の目を連続させた抑揚のある構成で、帽子は先端に煌めく小沸の掃き掛けを伴った小丸返り。粒の揃った小沸に匂を複合して明るく冴えた焼刃は、刃境に沸が付き、区上辺りに金線を伴うほつれ、砂流しが掛かり、差裏は肌目に沿ってほつれが盛んに入り、地肌と連動して刃中も躍動的。月山御家流の地鉄と彫物の美観が調和した逸品となっている。

Shōwa to the present: destruction and revival
The twentieth century nearly killed the craft twice: wartime distortion, then the occupation ban. The NBTHK’s founding in 1948 and licensed forging from 1953 rebuilt the sword as an art, crowned by Living National Treasures and the mukansa rank.

The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
