About the maker
Kikuoka Mitsutoshi光利
This is a pair of solid gold menuki by Kikuoka Mitsutoshi, depicting a tiger and leopard. Mitsutoshi was the son of Mitsumasa and was known for his skill in haikai poetry. The design of a tiger and leopard together was common in screen paintings of the Sengoku to early Edo periods, as leopards were often believed to be female tigers. This is an excellent work by Mitsutoshi, showing the strength of the Machibori school.
