The twentieth century nearly killed the craft twice: wartime distortion, then the occupation ban. The NBTHK’s founding in 1948 and licensed forging from 1953 rebuilt the sword as an art, crowned by Living National Treasures and the mukansa rank.
Swordsmith Ogawa Kanekuni was named Kunihiko and was born in Mugegawa, Gifu Prefecture in Taisho 14. From his mid-teens, he entered an apprenticeship with a smith to build his skills, and at age 18, he became an army-appointed swordsmith. After the war, he was forced to step away from sword making, but in Showa 47, he resolved to learn sword making from the basics and knocked on the door of Kanemoto, and thereafter, he became immersed in the study of the flamboyant Sukehiro of Osaka Shinto. At the Shinsaku Meito Ten, he won consecutive special prizes from Heisei 7 onwards, and in Heisei 18 at the age of 81, he was recognized as a Mukansa swordsmith.
