The craft survived the Meiji ban and the occupation’s near-extinction, and rebuilt itself deliberately: licensed forging from 1953, traditional methods required by law, Living National Treasures, and the mukansa rank above judgment.
Swordsmith Ogawa Kanekuni was from Seki, which became a center of swordmaking that produced many smiths during the Muromachi period, such as Kanesada and Magoroku Kanemoto, who were renowned for their sharpness. Born in Taisho 14, he entered the smithing profession and served as an army-appointed swordsmith during the war; after the war, he pursued the bright, deep nie style of the Osaka Soshu-den, such as Sukehiro and Inoue Shinkai from the early Edo period, and his ability to reproduce this style was recognized when he was designated a Mukansa swordsmith in Heisei 18.
