NihontoWatchNihontoWatchHachi-kikyo-mon sukashi Tsuba 八ツ木瓜形 鉄地 鋤下彫 陰透 丸耳 In paulownia wood box 明珍家は元来甲冑工を本職とし、傍ら鍔の製作をした者で、それらの鍔を古甲冑師、甲冑師と呼称して在銘品は稀である。すなわち明珍派が主流で工人の数も、もっと多く、ついで早乙女、春田、蓬莱、岩井、馬面、長曽祢、根尾、左近士、紀州などの諸分派がある。江戸時代に入ると各地に移住し羽州、加賀、越前、駿河、土佐で繁栄をみる。越前明珍吉久は江戸時代の明珍中では優秀な技量の持ち主で、越前松平家の抱工として十代の間、同名が連綿として続いた家柄で、寛文四年に没した吉久を初代として、文久三年に没した吉久が十代目である。本作は、良く鍛錬された鉄地に桔梗紋を八箇所透し、鋤下彫としている。やや小振りな様相ながら引き締まった姿形に時代を感じ、江戸初期頃の越前明珍と思われる。

The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
