NihontoWatch瀬戸吉廣刀匠は昭和二十年五月、福岡県の生まれ。昭和四十六年隅谷正峯師に入門。古今の名工たちも強く憧れた備前一文字の重花丁子の美に魅せられ、地鉄の選択、焼刃土、土置の方法、そして焼入れと、一つ一つ手探りの研究を蓄積し、新作名刀展で文化庁長官賞、毎日新聞社賞等の特賞に輝いている。平成八年十二月無鑑査認定の後も、映りの再現を目指し、意欲的に鋼に向かう日々を送っている。 この太刀は身幅広く元先の幅差殆どなく、重ね厚く棒樋深く掻き流され、腰反り高く付いて猪首鋒の、一見して鎌倉中期の太刀を想起させる雄渾な姿。地鉄は小杢目肌が良く錬れて詰み、小粒の地沸が均一に付いて瑞々しく潤い冴える。刃文は丁子に房状の刃、小丁子、花弁形の刃を交え、高低変化して重花丁子となり、細かな小沸が柔らかく降り積もって匂口締まりごころに冴え、匂立ち込めて水色に澄む刃中には匂足が長く射して交差し、所々に葉が浮かぶ。帽子は焼深く残し、二段に乱れ込んで上品な小丸に返る。茎は細かな筋違鑢で丁寧に仕立てられ、銘字も丹念に刻されている。日本美術刀剣保存協会会長賞を受賞した年の作で、吉廣刀匠の心技充実ぶりがよく示された備前福岡一文字写しの傑作である。

The twentieth century nearly killed the craft twice: wartime distortion, then the occupation ban. The NBTHK’s founding in 1948 and licensed forging from 1953 rebuilt the sword as an art, crowned by Living National Treasures and the mukansa rank.
