This katana is signed Izumi no Kami Kanesada and dated Keio 3 (1867), August. It is said to be similar to the beloved sword of Hijikata Toshizo, Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi. The blade features a robust construction with a thick kasane, moderate sori, and an extended chu-kissaki. The jigane shows masame-kitae with chikei along the grain, and the hamon is a fine suguha with bright nie, becoming stronger near the monouchi with yubashiri, small kinsuji, and sunagashi forming a niju-ba.

Under the Tokugawa peace the daishō became a regulated uniform, and demand gathered in the castle towns, above all Edo itself. The craft split two ways: brilliant display work for connoisseurs, and tested blades whose cutting results were sometimes inlaid in gold.
