The twentieth century nearly killed the craft twice: wartime distortion, then the occupation ban. The NBTHK’s founding in 1948 and licensed forging from 1953 rebuilt the sword as an art, crowned by Living National Treasures and the mukansa rank.
Swordsmith Hidemune was the son of Matsubara Kaneyoshi and was born in Showa 5. Known as Ryuhei, in Showa 32 he entered the tutelage of and trained under Nakata Kanehide (an Army commissioned swordsmith), who was a disciple of Watanabe Kanenaga, the author of the "Sekiden Tanpo Hidensho." He worked on the reproduction of the Soshu-den style and received consecutive awards at exhibitions such as the Shinsaku Meito Ten. Furthermore, he challenged the Bizen Ichimonji style and has also reproduced a flamboyant workmanship of saka-choji.
