This is a tanto made by Suo Nagahiro, presented to Nakatani Sadaomi by Lord Mori Takachika. The tang bears an inscription by Nakatani himself, detailing how he received this tanto as a treasure for self-defense and national service due to his meritorious work in constructing the Katsusaka Barrier Gate, a crucial defense point for the Choshu domain. This historical piece conveys the desperate efforts of the Choshu domain and its samurai who led the Bakumatsu Restoration.
