NihontoWatch将平は、藤安正博と言い、昭和二十一年、福島県伊達郡川俣町に生まれ、十九歳の時に、長野の人間国宝宮入昭平に入門、昭和四十七年に作刀許可を受けると、昭和五十年には、地元に近い福島市立子山(たつごやま)に鍛刀場を開設しました。毎年『現代刀職展』では、会長賞、奨励賞、優秀賞など、特賞入選多数の名工です。また、その斬れ味にも定評があり、十数年程前に某剣術家が、将平刀で様々な太さの鉄パイプを見事に截断したため、『現代の斬鉄剣』として一躍世の脚光を浴びました。今や抜刀用の刀は入手困難となっています。 本作に年紀はありませんが、自筆箱書きに『平成元年春』とありますので、同工五十三歳の作になります。 寸法一尺四寸三分強、切り刃造りの剣と言えば、大阪の天野山金剛寺に伝来する国宝の剣(生ぶ無銘)が有名。平安期の作、平安後期~鎌倉初期の高僧で、金剛寺を再興した阿観上人の持ち物であったと伝わります。おそらくはそれらに範を取ったものと鑑せられます。 良く練られた精良な地鉄、直調の上品な刃は、刃縁明るく冴え、細かなほつれ、二重刃掛かり、刃中金筋、砂流し掛かるなど、地刃共に大変良く出来ており、オリジナルの三鈷柄剣拵えに、専用二重蓋桐箱付き。 近年は、『斬鉄剣』作者として名高い藤安将平が、実用本位ではなく、鑑賞用美術刀剣としての古剣写しに挑んだ渾身の一振りです。
