Kuro kawa-zutsumi saya, aikuchi wakizashi koshirae Moto-haba (Width at Ha-machi) : Approx. 3.03cm An aikuchi wakizashi koshirae made in the late Edo period, modeled after the koshigatana kept for indoor preparation by high-ranking busho of the Muromachi period. It features a dynamic and vivid shakudo nanako-ji kin-iroe fuchi-kashira and kuchigane with a karakusa-mon design, and is equipped with a toppei-style kojiri kanagu reminiscent of a gin-ji katakiri-bori nagafukurin, along with a kiri-mon karakusa-zu warikogai. The saya is a kuro-urushi finished kawa-zutsumi with a brownish tint that feels good to the touch, and the kurigata kanagu for the cord to hang it from the waist is made in a gin-ji yuinawa style. The tsuka, wrapped in samegawa coated with kin-pun and polished down, is the source of its antique impression. The gold, appearing as if rubbed into the samegawa, has a good texture without becoming a gaudy hue. The hyotan-zu menuki attached here are made of warm-feeling kin-muku-ji in katachi-bori, with shakudo, suaka, and oborogin okigane finishing. The design of the extended vines in a karakusa style is stylish, the carving is sharp with a sense of three-dimensionality, and the iroe treatment added to the okigane has a natural feel.
