Description

This is a hira-zukuri wakizashi by Gyokushinsai Masakage, a skilled smith from the late Edo period, in the Bizen tradition. It features a sufficient width, shallow sori, and a refined form with koshi-hi and hoso-hi carvings. The jigane is a ko-itame hada, likely forged by skillfully combining old iron, showing a slightly standing grain and bright iron color with fine ji-nie.

Historical context

The Edo period (1615 to 1868)

›

Under the Tokugawa peace the daishō became a regulated uniform, and demand gathered in the castle towns, above all Edo itself. The craft split two ways: brilliant display work for connoisseurs, and tested blades whose cutting results were sometimes inlaid in gold.
