This tanto is signed by Minamoto Masakage, with an 'Ura Kikumon' (chrysanthemum crest on the reverse) and dated Ansei 6th year, 8th month (1859). Masakage, whose real name was Gotō Risuke, was born in Toyama, Etchū Province. He studied under Minamoto Masao and Suishinshi Masatsugu in Edo, improving his forging skills before moving to Takada Castle town in Echigo to establish his forge, meeting the demands of the turbulent Bakumatsu period.
