This tanto, though unsigned (mumei) with an original tang (ubu-nakago), is attributed to the 11th Generation Aizu Kanesada, a prominent smith active in Aizu during the late Edo period. Kanesada is known for forging the beloved sword of Hijikata Toshizo. This robust and elegant tanto would have been carried by samurai defending Aizu-Wakamatsu against the Satsuma-Choshu forces at the end of the Edo period.

We could not find an authenticity certificate on the seller’s listing. Japanese swords and fittings are normally papered by the NBTHK (or the NTHK). Without one, the attribution is the seller’s own assessment and has not been independently verified — treat it with caution and ask the dealer about certification before buying.
