Sengoku Seki was an industry: smiths organized under their tutelary Kasuga shrine, arming the war bands of central Japan. Magoroku Kanemoto’s sanbonsugi and the finest Kanesada work prove quality survived inside mass production.
Kanesada was a descendant of Daruma Masamitsu of Yamashiro Province, and because he moved to Hachiya in Mino Province around the Bunmei era of the mid-Muromachi period, he is known by the name Hachiya Seki. The works of the third generation commonly seen in the Eisho and Daiei eras, as well as the fourth generation with Tenbun era dates, all exhibit a clear and refined jigane with sharp workmanship in suguha or midareba; while his skill is high and his reputation is great, dated works are extremely rare.
