This is a tanto by Gassan Sadatoshi, born in 1946 as the third son of Living National Treasure Gassan Sadakazu. Made in 1984 when the smith was 38, it features a beautiful Ayasugi-kitae (grain pattern) and intricate carvings on both sides. Sadatoshi is a highly acclaimed modern smith, designated as Mukansa and a holder of Nara Prefecture's Intangible Cultural Property.
