The Muromachi period (1392–1573) is where the katana properly begins: the uchigatana — worn edge-up through the sash — displaced the tachi as Japan’s standard sword during these two centuries. The period spans remarkable range, from the refined early work of the Ōei-Bizen smiths to the vigorous later production of Sue-Bizen and the Seki (Mino) tradition that armed the Sengoku wars. For collectors it offers genuine period katana — blades made as katana, not converted from tachi — at every level of the market.
