This katana was forged by Motooki, a craftsman from the Aizu domain, in the second month of Ansei 6 (1859), the year after the Treaty of Amity and Commerce was signed. Motooki, born in Aizu in Bunsei 1 (1818), was also known as Kakudaike. He moved to Edo in Ansei 6 and studied under Ishido Korekazu. He changed his name to Hidekuni in the autumn of Keio 1 (1865) and received the title of Yamato no Kami in July of the following year.

Under the Tokugawa peace the daishō became a regulated uniform, and demand gathered in the castle towns, above all Edo itself. The craft split two ways: brilliant display work for connoisseurs, and tested blades whose cutting results were sometimes inlaid in gold.
