NihontoWatch会津元興は、角大八元興の孫にあたり角大助と称しました。父、角大治秀国が早世してしまったため、会津道辰など、時の会津刀工から学んだものと思われます。初代角大八は江戸の水心子正秀の弟子となり鍛刀を学び、会津藩の命により薩摩に行き、元平門人となり元興と改めました。本作は、二代を元興の作品です。二代会津元興は、安政4年、会津藩松平家からの預かり弟子として石堂運寿是一に入門し、安政6年には入道し、松軒と号しました。松軒元興は、慶応2年に大和守を受領し、大和守秀国と改名しました。幕末動乱期には、京都を守護する為に、会津藩主松平容保公とともに、松軒元興、会津十一代和泉守兼定らも上洛し、会津藩士や新選組隊士の帯刀を作刀しました。新選組局長近藤勇や副長土方歳三の刀の中にも大和守秀国銘の刀があったと伝えられています。明治24年80歳にて没しました。松軒元興は初代よりも上手で優れた出来の刀を残しており、名工揃いの会津刀工のなかでも異才を放つ上工として知られています。 本刀短刀は、刃長が七寸二分弱。棟は三ッ棟になる鎧通姿の短刀です。地鉄は杢目肌が現れ地沸が付く強い鉄です。刃紋は湾れ調子の直刃で、匂口明るく小沸が付いて冴えます。刃中には砂流し金線が刃縁を中心によく掛かり盛んな働きを見せています。帽子は掃き掛けるようにして先小丸へと返ります。茎は生ぶ。会津元興 (松軒元興)の作品と鑑定された、地刃共に健全で見ごたえが十分にある優れた出来口を示す短刀です。

The Shinshintō revival
Around 1800 Suishinshi Masahide argued in his writings that the craft must return to the old masters’ methods: the fukkotō revival. His greatest successor Naotane worked convincingly in Bizen and Sōshū manners that had been dead for centuries.

The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
