NihontoWatch刀剣種別 『刀』 Katana 銘 『作陽幕下士細川正義造（刻印）天保十五甲辰年仲秋』 sakuyou bakkashi HOSOKAWA MASAYOSHI tempo15nen kinoetatsu nen cyuushu 日本刀 鑑定書『日本美術刀剣保存協会 特別保存 刀剣』 NBTHK 『Tokubetsu Hozon Paper』 時代『天保15年』 Production age 『AD1845』 細川正義は主税佐と称し、水心子正秀の門に入り、初め正方、さらに守秀と銘し、後に正秀と改めている。作州津山藩主松平家の抱え工となり、江戸に多く住して鍛刀生活を送り、安政五年に歿している。彼は師正秀の研究理論を実践した刀工であり、一門中の事実上の後継者であり、大慶直胤と双璧である。作風は大別して備前伝と相州伝があり、備前伝に優れたものが多い。 この刀は小板目の詰んだ鍛えに大肌が交じり、小丁字乱れに重花丁字風や小互の目などが交じった刃を焼き、上品ながらも華やかに乱れ、足長くさかんに入り、葉を交え、匂やや深く、小沸がよくつき、砂流しがかかるなど出来口を示している。彼の備前伝の代表的な一口で、得意の丁字乱れを巧みに焼いており、小模様ながらも重花丁字の交じった華やかな様は、『新刀銘集録』にいう『丁字乱れは八重桜の如く重なり』と形容するとおりであり、同工の本領を遺憾無く発揮している。また、丁子の頭が角ばり気味となったり、焼頭が押し合う様に密着するなども、この工の手癖が窺える。健全で長寸の姿も好ましく、地刃に破綻が見られないなど、正義会心の作である。

The Shinshintō revival
Around 1800 Suishinshi Masahide argued in his writings that the craft must return to the old masters’ methods: the fukkotō revival. His greatest successor Naotane worked convincingly in Bizen and Sōshū manners that had been dead for centuries.
A Hozon-certified blade judged to show notably superior workmanship and a better state of preservation. The bar is higher: re-tempered blades and most unsigned Muromachi/Edo works are excluded.
The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
