八橋 Yatsuhashi "8 bridges" A large and classic iron sukashi tsuba of the Kyo Sukashi school. This charming piece depicts the theme of Yatsuhashi—the "Eight Bridges". Its openwork design incorporates the eight wooden bridges, a tranquil pond, flying geese, and at the base a fresh shoot of iris emerging. Together these elements evoke a quiet winter scene in Japan. This winter landscape is meant to recall the place where the poet Ariwara no Narihira composed a poem for his wife. The poem alludes to the irises growing beside the bridge and famously begins each line with the character for "iris" (kakitsubata). The poem is: Karakoromo kitsutsu narenishi tsuma shi areba harubaru kinuru tabi o shi zo omou. A Tang-style robe I have worn so often- familiar as my wife. Now, having come so far, this journey weighs heavy in my thoughts. Impact damage that appears to be a cut in the web can be seen at about the 6 o'clock position on the ura. The surface of the work also shows its age. For those that love pre-Edo tsuba, these features are part of the story of the piece. This tsuba was once in the collection of N. Nakamura. It comes with a custom fitted box and case. The box bears Mr. Nakamura's seal in two places. A rare opportunity to own a fine and classic Kyo-Sukashi tsuba.
