NihontoWatchNihontoWatch馬面氏の起源は戦国時代に遡り、越前国で甲冑製作に携わる一族であった。戦国時代に流行した馬甲の、特に顔の防御に用いられた馬面を得意とした馬面師の家系という説がある。馬面という異色な名字は領主の本多家から賜ったものである。序政の作は馬などの図を陰に糸透した鉄鐔が多い。本作は作例稀な朧銀地であり、彼が菊池序克門であったことを雄弁に物語っている。朧銀磨地を緩やかな碁石形とし、片切彫と肉合彫を駆使して、雲を従え、宙を飛ぶ龍を生き生きと描いている。自分が良いと思ったものは何でも採り入れて作品に昇華したのであろう、小刻みに鏨を動かした片切彫、角や顔に刻された三角鏨、瑞雲の形の櫃穴に添う極細の糸透など、技と感性を結晶させた優品である。櫃穴の彫口までもが美しい。

The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
