NihontoWatchNihontoWatch陸奥国岩城の名工明義(あきよし)は河野春明にも学び、山水風の風景図や写実的人物図、風情のある植物図等を得意とした。この鐔は、主君に対する義の為に死んだ中国春秋戦国時代の武人予譲(よじょう)を描いた作。「士は己を知る者のために死す」の句で知られる予譲は、主君の仇討を謀ったが決せず捕えられる。最期の時、敵将の衣服を借りると、その衣服を切り裂いて主君の仇討ちを果たしたとし、自らをその剣で処したのである。この場面を彫り描いた本作は、鍛え良い鉄地に精密な高彫象嵌を施し、予譲の覚悟の表情までも鮮明に表している。

The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
