NihontoWatch宗勉刀匠は 昭和2年生。筑州山王住宗勉作、筑州住宗勉作などと銘を切り相州伝を得意とします。数々の受賞を果たした無鑑査刀匠です。本作は筑州山王住宗勉と長銘を切っていることから入念作であり、作者が満足のいく仕上がりの一振であることが判ります。勉刀匠は平成27年に88歳で他界されました。数多くの名品を残した刀剣界の巨匠です。 本作は、板目肌に杢目交じる肌が美しく現れる地鉄。刃文は、沸が良く付いた明るい大互の目乱れに丁子を交えた刃文を焼いており、刃縁には沸粒が輝いて付き、刃中には砂流し、金線が働きます。帽子はそのまま先掃き掛けるようにして小丸へ深く返ります。茎は生ぶ。キリッとした鏨使いで銘が刻されています。本刀は、出来が良く、宗勉刀匠の代表作品に数えられるに違いない完璧な出来栄えの御刀です。御家の御守り刀にも相応しいと思う御奨めの逸品です。白鞘入り。特別保存刀剣鑑定書。

Shōwa to the present: destruction and revival
The twentieth century nearly killed the craft twice: wartime distortion, then the occupation ban. The NBTHK’s founding in 1948 and licensed forging from 1953 rebuilt the sword as an art, crowned by Living National Treasures and the mukansa rank.
A Hozon-certified blade judged to show notably superior workmanship and a better state of preservation. The bar is higher: re-tempered blades and most unsigned Muromachi/Edo works are excluded.
The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
