NihontoWatchNihontoWatch室町時代中期、廣賀は相模から伯耆へ移住し、守護大名山名氏に仕えている。応仁の乱の後に山名氏の勢威が衰えると、大永四年五月に隣国出雲の尼子経久の軍勢が伯耆を制圧したため、国外へ退去した小鴨掃部介の家臣見田兵衛は刀工に転じて伯州廣賀に入門したという(注1)。五郎左衛門尉廣賀はその子で、相州綱廣の門下でも研鑽を積み、戦国武士の需に応えて優品を手掛けた。 本作は、小脇差としても、あるいは短刀としても使用が可能な一尺強の剛体。身幅が広く重ね厚く、ふくらも充分に付いて量感があり、棒樋と連樋が掻かれて姿が引き締まる。地鉄は小板目に小杢目を交えて詰み、繊細でしかも穏やかな地景が躍動し、物打付近に地斑を僅かに交え、湯走り掛かり、滾々と湧き立った小粒の地沸が光を反射して淡い沸映りとなり、肌合いは弾力味を感じさせる。尖りごころの小互の目に小丁子を交えた刃文は、微かに逆ごころを帯びて僅かに起伏が付き、差裏の区上付近が大きく食い違って二重刃となり、物打辺りには飛焼状の湯走りが掛かり、島刃を交えた帽子は、表が浅く弛み、裏は乱れ込んで突き上げて浅く返る。銀砂のような沸の粒子が付いて明るい焼刃は淡い沸筋の流れに葉と小足が働いて二重刃となり、刃中は細かな沸の粒子で昂然と輝いて美しい。中程が張って先の細い相州特有の舟底形の茎の保存状態は良好で、居住地銘を添えた刀工銘、年紀、注文銘(注2)が丹念に刻されている。総体が戦国気質に満ち、出来も頗る優れている。 素銅地の色合いを活かした海老図金具で装い、桃山時代の風情を映し出し、しかもお目出度い朱漆塗の海老鞘拵(注3)が附されている。 注1...『因伯の刀工と鐔』『伯州廣賀刀押形聚』参照。武士の家の出身ながら刀工に転じた例としては肥前國忠吉がいる。 注2...廣賀には永禄七年二月廿一日紀の備中松山城主三村元親の需打ちの太刀(『刀剣銘字大鑑』)の他、有力武将の注文打の作がある。なお、藤原清則 は国名がないので伯耆の武将とみられる。 注3...廣賀(喜びを廣める)に相応しい外装である。

The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
