Tsunagiuma (tethered horse) designs are a motif depicting horses tied to trees or stakes. Since ancient times, horses have had a deep connection with warrior society and have been featured in many paintings and tosogu. This work represents pine trees, manmaku, and tsunagiuma on a fine shakudo nanako-ji with takabori zogan iroe. Kin-iroe is skillfully applied, showing a beautiful contrast with the shakudo nanako-ji. The style is a highly decorative fuchi-kashira that brings to mind the Hamano school or Kaga Goto.
