Description

Weight: 1143g (excluding saya) It has arrived—a masterpiece utsushi of Minamoto Kiyomaro by the swordsmith Minamoto Yasumitsu, who is said to have inherited the cutting ability of the second son of Komiya Shiro Kunimitsu, a smith renowned as a "great worker" (o-wazamono) of the Showa era. Yasumitsu, whose real name is Komiya Akimitsu, resides in Omuta City, Fukuoka Prefecture, and was born in Showa 31 (1956). He studied under his grandfather Kunimitsu and his father Kunimitsu. His grandfather Kunimitsu was the teacher of the famous smith So Munehiro (the father of the renowned So Tsutomu), making him a master of the So Tsutomu lineage. He has won numerous awards at the Shinsaku Meito Ten (New Masterpiece Sword Exhibition), including the Award of Excellence and the Doryoku-sho (Effort Award). This sword is a masterpiece utsushi of the Bakumatsu era master Minamoto Kiyomaro. It displays a gokai (grand/dynamic) sugata with a wide moto-haba and a significant difference in width compared to the saki-haba. The jigane is a tightly packed itame-hada, exhibiting abundant chikei throughout the ji. The hamon is a spirited and bright gunome-midare in nioi-deki with ko-nie, mimicking Kiyomaro’s style, skillfully interspersed with kinsuji within the ha. The koshirae, featuring a modern and stylish white tsuka, adds further elegance to this blade. This sword is a special-order Minamoto Kiyomaro utsushi, originally commissioned at a high cost by an elderly connoisseur. As he has aged, he has entrusted it to us with the request to "pass it on at a low price to someone who will cherish it." Therefore, through his special kindness, we are offering it at an exceptionally low price. Please take this opportunity to enjoy it.

Shōwa to the present: destruction and revival

The twentieth century nearly killed the craft twice: wartime distortion, then the occupation ban. The NBTHK’s founding in 1948 and licensed forging from 1953 rebuilt the sword as an art, crowned by Living National Treasures and the mukansa rank.
