NihontoWatchNihontoWatch平安時代の定秀から始まった豊後鍛冶は、室町期に入ると平高田と称される一派が台頭。平長盛を中心に平姓を名乗る一族が、従来の大和伝の他に備前伝や相州伝を取り入れて備前に劣らぬ繁栄を見せている。 平増盛は通称弥左ヱ門。平長盛の三男で、後に鎮盛に改名すると云う。 本作、戦国期の小振りな平造り短刀。やや内反り気味で棟は三ッ棟に造り込まれ、身幅を抑えて鋭利な印象。板目肌には杢目が交じり、小沸出来の直刃には金筋が絡んで帽子は小丸に返っている。茎は生ぶで横鑢が切られ、大振りで特徴ある銘が認められる。 拵は上品な雰囲気が漂う朱鞘の合口拵で柄は出し鮫。縁頭や小尻などは黒角で揃え、銀地四つ又抱き角紋の目貫に笄は真鍮地竹図。 上作刀工。特別保存刀剣鑑定書附。

A Hozon-certified blade judged to show notably superior workmanship and a better state of preservation. The bar is higher: re-tempered blades and most unsigned Muromachi/Edo works are excluded.
The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
