Sengoku Seki was an industry: smiths organized under their tutelary Kasuga shrine, arming the war bands of central Japan. Magoroku Kanemoto’s sanbonsugi and the finest Kanesada work prove quality survived inside mass production.
This Koto katana is attributed to Kanesada (Seki Yagoro), a swordsmith active during the Eishō to Tenbun eras of the Muromachi period, and is traditionally believed to be the maternal grandfather of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The blade features a suguha hamon mixed with gunome, a flowing itame-hada jigane, and comes with a well-preserved koshirae. While showing some light surface rust from its old polish, it has no fatal flaws and is suitable for Iaido practice.
