NihontoWatch波平一派は、平安後期とも伝わる初祖正国以降、幕末明治期の六十四代安行まで、九百年もの長きに渡って、その命脈を保ち続けた大和系鍛冶です。正国以降、行安、安行を嫡流的に継承し、一門の多くが『安』、『行』を通字としています。中でも波平行安は、『波平らかにして、行くこと安らか』とも読めることから、古来より水軍、近代では海軍軍人に好まれました。 本工は、同派正系六十三代目を継承した行安の佳品、茎の所持者銘、地刃の出来からして、注文打ち入念作と鑑せられます。 六十二代安利の子で、文化七年生まれ、勘之丞と称し、安政五年に『大和介』を受領、慶応元年に『大和守』へ転じています。行安としては最後の刀工、作は嘉永初年から明治初年頃まで、明治十五年、七十三歳で没しています。 本作は、慶応三年、同工五十八歳の作、鎬高く、身幅、重ねガシッとした頑健な造り込みで、地刃すこぶる健全、刀がズシッと重いです。 やや沈み心に良く詰んだ綺麗な地鉄は、細やかな柾肌流れ、細直刃湾れ調で僅かに小互の目交じりの刃は、刃縁匂い勝ちで所々荒沸付き、ほつれ、打ちのけ、喰違刃、二重刃風の沸筋掛かり、刃中小足、葉、小互の目足入るなど、派手な出来ではないですが、刃縁の細やかで多彩な働きは素晴らしいものがあります。 大和物お好きな方は是非、海の男ならずとも、一振り持ちたい波平行安です。

The Shinshintō revival
Around 1800 Suishinshi Masahide argued in his writings that the craft must return to the old masters’ methods: the fukkotō revival. His greatest successor Naotane worked convincingly in Bizen and Sōshū manners that had been dead for centuries.

The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
