NihontoWatchNihontoWatchC252. Early Tosho (sword maker) tsuba. 8.2 x 8.2 x .3 cm. The nakago hitsu-ana is .8 x 2.8 cm. This tsuba comes with a Hozon paper from the NBTHK, dated 2018 and giving it to Tosho; both the consignor and I believe this to be early Tosho. A conch shell and a Shinto priest’s hat are the sukashi; the iron is excellent with gobs of tekkotsu on the rim. Condition is great; comes with a box and pillow.

The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
