NihontoWatch福岡県を出身とする盛高家の歴史は古く、鎌倉時代 永仁頃(1293)、宝満山の金剛兵衛源盛高が系譜の始まりだとされます。本工 盛高靖博は、明治四十一年(1908)に熊本県八代市に生まれ、本名を盛高良夫といいます。金剛兵衛源盛高二十五代目に当たり、高等小学校(現在の中学1・2年頃)卒業と同時に家業の鍛冶職に従事します。刀剣展にて入選、優秀賞など受賞多数で、同工の鍛えた刀は、よく斬れて折れないと評価も高く、昭和二十九年(1945)、若干三十六歳で現代刀工の番付にて「西の横綱」に列せられる刀工となりました。戦後は現役を引退し、後継者育成に尽力し、昭和五十七年(1982)に歿します。本刀含め金剛兵衛の刀の茎は「卒塔婆」の形に作られ、「斬られた者が安らかに成仏するように」と願いが込められていると云われます。 本作体配は、刃長が二尺二寸六分強で、身幅広く、重ね厚く確りとし、反りが適度に利いて、ふくらやや枯れ心の中切っ先となる豪壮で力強い刀姿となります。地鉄は板目肌が流れ心で、地沸よく付き、肌目に沿って地景が入る鍛となります。焼刃は沸出来で、湾れ調子の互の目刃文です。刃中には処々砂流し、金筋が入るなどして盛んに働きます。帽子は掃きかけて先小丸へ浅く返ります。茎は卒塔婆形の茎尻に切鑢目で、刀工銘を刻します。本作、手に持ってズシリと重量感があり、地刃の出来も力感があって上々の金剛兵衛源盛高の優品です。白鞘、金鍍金二重はばき。保存刀剣鑑定書。

Shōwa to the present: destruction and revival
The twentieth century nearly killed the craft twice: wartime distortion, then the occupation ban. The NBTHK’s founding in 1948 and licensed forging from 1953 rebuilt the sword as an art, crowned by Living National Treasures and the mukansa rank.

The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
