NihontoWatchNihontoWatch濃州兼法(かねのり)の匠銘は康正頃の右衛門四郎に始まり、明応頃の介右衛門尉、大永頃に兼常に学んだ兼法、その子で天文頃に越前一乗谷に移住した工などが知られている(注)。また、その後も多くの兼法同銘工が、遠江、信濃伊那、駿河などに移住しており、兼法一門の技術力が高く評価され戦国武将の信頼を得ていたことを証している。 寸法を控えて接近戦での効用を高めたこの脇差は、天文頃の美濃に拠点をおいた兼法の作。元先の身幅が広く、研ぎ減りもなく先反りが加わって物打の張った覇気横溢の姿格好。重ね厚めながら樋を掻き流して軽量化を図り、刃先鋭く斬り込んだ刃の抜けも計算された断面構造。所々に杢目肌を交えた板目鍛えの地鉄は、鮮明な地景によって肌起ち、淡く映りが立って鋭い切れ味を窺わせる。互の目乱の刃文は焼頭が地中に深く突き入る態の連続で、焼頭が茶花の蕾状、尖りごころ、矢筈状、蟹の爪状、瓢箪状、一部は地中に離れた飛焼となるなど多彩に変化し、浅く乱れ込んだ地蔵帽子の返りが長く焼下がる。匂口の締まった焼刃は一際明るく、刃境には細かな金線が躍り、ふっくらと包み込む匂も鮮やかに、刃中には匂足が広がると共に淡い葉や匂の流れが漂う。檜垣鑢が掛けられた茎には個性的な太い銘が刻されている。 東遊齋一明(いちめい)の縁と胴(どう)金(がね)付栗形(くりがた)の揃金具を設けた拵が附されている。黒石目地塗りの鞘は氷割文を陰に意匠して味わいが格別。一明の縁と栗形は富士越龍に舞鶴図で、元治元年の年紀入。いずれも鉄地高彫象嵌の精巧な彫口。黒漆を塗り施した柄糸で堅く巻き締められている。 注...朝倉孝景の鍛冶として活躍。天正から慶長 にかけての兼法は柴田勝家に仕えた。

A Hozon-certified blade judged to show notably superior workmanship and a better state of preservation. The bar is higher: re-tempered blades and most unsigned Muromachi/Edo works are excluded.
The NBTHK (Nihon Bijutsu Tōken Hozon Kyōkai, the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords) is a public-interest incorporated foundation founded in 1948 and supervised by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō); it is based at the Japanese Sword Museum in Tokyo. Its expert panels physically examine each submitted work (shinsa) and issue a certificate (kanteishō) ranking it by artistic and historical merit. NBTHK papers are the most widely recognized standard of authentication for Japanese swords and fittings.
