This is a precious wakizashi by Heianjo Ju Yoshitsugu, which was requested and studied by the Gifu Prefectural Museum as a research subject due to its exceptional quality. Yoshitsugu is a smith with deep ties to Gifu Prefecture; he fled the turmoil of the Onin War (1467, 559 years ago) in Kyoto and moved to Seki in Mino, where he studied the Mino-den before eventually returning to Kyoto. Because of this, his work is also referred to as Kurama-Seki. Mount Kurama in Kyoto is anciently famous as the site where the beloved young general of the Genji clan, Minamoto no Yoshitsune, underwent rigorous training under the Kurama Tengu. This is a precious hira-zukuri wakizashi by Heianjo Ju Yoshitsugu, who forged swords at Kurama-dera in Kyoto around the Meio era of the Muromachi period (1492, 534 years ago). While the first generation Yoshitsugu from the Meitoku era of the Nanbokucho period began as a pupil of the second generation Kyo Nobukuni, this Yoshitsugu belongs to the Sanjo Yoshinori school. This wakizashi presents a magnificent, healthy hira-zukuri sugata with a wide moto-mihaba and saki-mihaba, appearing as grand as a work by Kyo Nobukuni. The jigane displays itame-hada mixed with mokume-hada and masame-hada, with chikei appearing in the ji. The horimono features a masterfully carved Take-kurabe no Hi (bamboo-style grooves). The hamon is a nioi-deki notare-midare with konie and kuichigai-ba, exhibiting an elegant and refined kofū (ancient style) quality. While the works of Kurama Yoshitsugu of Kyo-Yamashiro have been famously wonderful since ancient times, because the city of Kyoto was reduced to burnt fields during the Muromachi period's Onin War, it is extremely rare to see a work by Yoshitsugu, making this wakizashi remarkably precious.
