This wakizashi, though unsigned, is attributed to Sho sanmi Arikoto (Chigusa Arikoto) due to a waka poem carved on the blade. Arikoto, a passionate individual born in 1797, was not only a master of various arts but also studied sword forging under Nankai Taro Choson. The blade features a beautiful jigane with clear hada patterns and a suguha hamon with fine nie particles, while the accompanying koshirae, made under Arikoto's guidance, includes a tsuba and menuki depicting rabbits under the moon, hinting at the Noh play 'Chikubushima'.

For two and a half centuries of peace the sword was the warrior’s legal badge rather than his weapon. Each great city developed its own manner, Edo’s tested strength against Ōsaka’s polished brilliance, until demand thinned in the era’s last decades.
