This is a tsuba with a branching plum blossom openwork design on a well-forged iron ground of tatemaru-gata (vertically elongated round) shape. Though unsigned, it is attributed to the Kanki school due to the sekigane (metal lining) in the hitsu-ana. The Kanki school is one of the representative Higo tsuba schools, known for its quality iron and refined, elegant designs.
