Description

It has appeared, it has appeared! Be astonished, for this is the emergence of a miraculous tanto. While Izumi no Kami Kanesada (Nosada) is known for producing Rai Kunitoshi utsushi tanto that are the envy of collectors, this is a miraculous and historical emergence of what is believed to be the only existing masterpiece of a Rai Kunitoshi utsushi by Kanemoto, who is famous for the sanbonsugi. This tanto is indispensable for the study of Magoroku Kanemoto; it is a precious Rai Kunitoshi utsushi by the Shodai Kanemoto, the founder of the lineage that has continued for 27 generations and 500 years. Although the name is world-famous in the sword circles, extant works are incredibly rare; this is a work from around the Bunmei era (circa 1473) of the Muromachi period (552 years ago). It is an ancient, ancient tanto from the time when the Onin War was in full swing and Ashikaga Yoshihisa became the ninth Shogun of the Ashikaga Shogunate. Shodai Kanemoto is a master smith representing the Sue-Seki school. His real name was Tarozaemon, residing in Noshu Akasaka. This tanto exhibits a Rai Kunitoshi utsushi shape with no sori and a downward-pointing (fusetta) kissaki, recreating the archaic Kamakura period Rai tanto sugata. The jigane is forged in ko-itame hada with fine ji-nie, showing a faint bo-utsuri along the mune on the omote, and a faint midare-utsuri near the kissaki on the ura, possessing an archaic flavor. The hamon is a skillfully tempered Rai Kunitoshi style suguha in nioi-deki with ko-nie. The mei is chiseled in an elegant, angular style, being the signature of the Shodai Kanemoto, the father of Magoroku. This is the emergence of a miraculous Rai Kunitoshi utsushi tanto; we are offering this Shodai Kanemoto work—the origin of the Kanemoto line that has lasted 27 generations despite extremely few surviving pieces—at a special bargain price. Please enjoy it.
