Description

The modern swordsmith Sumitani Masamine, who is exceptionally famous, was designated a Ningen Kokuho (Living National Treasure) in Showa 56 at the age of 60. He received the highest honor, the Masamune-sho, three times in Showa 40, Showa 41, and Showa 49. This tachi is a masterpiece created during the peak of his career in Showa 49 at the high-spirited age of 53, a year in which he produced his finest work and won the Masamune-sho. The sugata of this tachi exhibits a grand and magnificent Kamakura period style with a wide moto-mihaba, wide saki-mihaba, and an ikubi-kissaki. The jigane is a product of the period when Sumitani Masamine was devoting himself day and night to research and repeated refinement to recreate the old jigane of the Kamakura period. The jigane is forged in ko-itame hada, successfully recreating the antique steel of the era, and from the moto, a midare-utsuri appears in the ji, representing a brilliant success in reproducing utsuri in the modern era. The horimono consists of beautifully carved futasuji-hi. The hamon is the so-called "Sumitani Choji," featuring a powerful gunome-choji with nie and great variation, mixed with many sakasa-choji and ashi within the ha, making it truly magnificent. The Tensho koshirae, which is said to have cost over 1 million yen at the time, is luxurious and adds further splendor to this precious tachi, a masterpiece of the Ningen Kokuho Sumitani Masamine. Please enjoy this wonderfully flamboyant meito by the Ningen Kokuho Sumitani Masamine.
