It has arrived—a masterpiece by the swordsmith Kumagai Nyudo Fujiwara Morisui, the direct disciple of the first generation Kobayashi Yasuhiro. Currently, Yasuhiro's swords are incredibly popular and impossible to obtain, known as "Zantetsuken" (iron-cutting swords). This blade is a magnificent utsushi of the Kamakura period Yamashiro master Rai Kunimitsu. The master, Kobayashi Yasuhiro, was born in Taisho 3 and established a forge in Takanawa, Tokyo. He is famous and popular as a maverick among modern swordsmiths for his dedication to reproducing koto from before the Oei era. Based on ancient methods, he forged using maru-kitae (single-layer forging) without a shingane. Despite being a gendaito smith, Yasuhiro's blades have the appearance and flavor of ancient swords, and are world-renowned as "Zantetsuken" for their extraordinary sharpness and ability to cut through iron.
The direct disciple and creator of this sword, Morisui, was born Kumagai Ichiji on June 7, Taisho 7. His first mei was Morisui, which he later changed to Morishige. As indicated by the soe-mei, this sword is an utsushi of the Kamakura period Rai Kunimitsu. The sugata features a torii-zori with a wide moto-mihaba and a distinct difference between the moto and saki-mihaba. It brilliantly realizes the Kamakura period tachi-sugata with ample ha-niku.
The jigane follows the ancient maru-kitae method learned from his master Yasuhiro, forged without a shingane. The ko-itame hada is finely packed with chikei appearing in the ji. The masame-tinged jihada near the habuchi is powerful and beautiful. The hamon is in the style of Rai Kunimitsu, a bright and clear nioi-deki based on suguha mixed with gunome and choji-ashi. The interior of the ha is magnificent, displaying an abundance of kinsuji and sunagashi. It is a superb work that reproduces the koto style inherited from the first generation Kobayashi Yasuhiro.
We have received this sword from an elderly collector who has cherished it for years, saying, "I have grown old, so please pass this on at a low price to someone who will treasure it." Therefore, we are offering this rare masterpiece by Kumagai Morisui—who, like his master Yasuhiro of Zantetsuken fame, produced few works—at a special discounted price. Please enjoy this exceptional blade.
