The Enju school was founded by Taro Kunimura, the grandson of Rai Kuniyuki, who moved from Yamashiro to Higo. They served as the exclusive swordsmiths for the Kikuchi clan and flourished from the late Kamakura period through the Nanbokucho period. The sugata features a standard width and thickness with a graceful sori, retaining a refined appearance. The jigane is a dense itame-hada mixed with mokume, displaying a beautiful and clear texture with abundant ji-nie and shirakage-utsuri. The hamon is a gentle chu-suguha based on hoshi, with a bright and clear nioiguchi, containing fine ko-nie and sunagashi. The boshi is sugu with a brief komaru kaeri. The koshirae is an elegant set featuring: Fuchi-Kashira: Shakudo nanako-ji with autumn insects and flowers in takabori and iro-e. Menuki: Shakudo with floral motifs in yose-zabori. Tsuba: Shakudo nanako-ji, mokko-gata, with autumn grass and insect motifs. Saya: Black roiro lacquer. This is a masterpiece that exemplifies the elegant and dignified style of the Enju school, which inherits the traditions of the Rai school. It is highly recommended for collectors.
