It has arrived—a katana by Chikuzen Nobukuni, the school kept as a secret weapon by the Kuroda family of Chikuzen (Fukuoka) and not revealed to the world until the Meiji era as their otome-kaji. It was first introduced and made known to the world by the businessman Sugiyama Shigemaru, who was also known as a mastermind behind the scenes of the political world. The first generation Chikuzen Nobukuni Heishiro Yoshimasa was the legitimate son of the 12th generation Chikuzen Nobukuni Yoshisada, descending from the famous Yamashiro Nobukuni. This katana is a work from around the Genroku era (1702) (324 years ago) by the 3rd generation Nobukuni Heishiro Yoshimasa, who represents the 15th generation from Yamashiro Nobukuni. This was the time of the righteous uprising of the Ako Roshi, who raided the Kira residence to avenge their lord, Asano Takumi-no-kami, the daimyo of the Ako Domain who was ordered to commit seppuku immediately after the sword-drawing incident against the head of the koke, Kira Kozuke-no-suke, in the Matsu no Roka of Edo Castle. This sword is a wonderful and precious work bearing the Shigemune mei, a signature used by the 3rd generation Nobukuni Yoshimasa in his later years. The sugata of this sword shows a difference between the moto-mihaba and saki-mihaba with a shallow sori. The jigane is forged in itame-hada, and the hamon is a gunome-ba in nioi-deki with ko-nie. The koshirae is a Satsuma-koshirae with a black ro-saya from that period; it is magnificent and rare, adding further splendor to this sword. This Shigemune katana has been cherished for generations by an old family, but as they have grown old, we have been entrusted to pass it on at a low price to someone who will treasure it. Because there are some changes due to age, we are offering it at a special, exceptionally low price. Please enjoy it.
