This wakizashi is by Masahiro, originally named Yoshihiro, who studied in Bizen Osafune and became a藩工 (han-ko) for the Kokura domain in Keio 1st year. Dated Keio 3rd year (1867), it is a well-made hirazukuri blade with a thick kasane, refined jigane, and a tight gunome hamon. This piece represents the turbulent end of the Edo period.

Under the Tokugawa peace the daishō became a regulated uniform, and demand gathered in the castle towns, above all Edo itself. The craft split two ways: brilliant display work for connoisseurs, and tested blades whose cutting results were sometimes inlaid in gold.
