This is a Katana with mounting by Monjyu Shigesada, an active smith in Kii Province during the early Edo period. Shigesada was a master of the Monjyu school, a branch of the Yamato tradition during the Shinto period, and is said to be a disciple of the first Shigenaga. The blade exhibits a typical Kanbun Shinto shape with a narrow tip compared to the base, and a shallow sori. The jigane shows a strong forging with prominent itame-hada and chikei, while the hamon features large gunome with hakoba, resembling the works of Muramasa from the Muromachi period.
